Despite heroic resistance the Leander was captured. The French plundered everything even the surgeon’s equipment. Yet Thompson was later honourably acquitted for the loss of his ship. The court praised his unprecedented defense.

Thompson’s service didn’t end with combat. He served as Comptroller of the Navy and Treasurer of Greenwich Hospital. He was a Member of Parliament and a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. His life was filled with remarkable achievements.
