Contemplating mortality leads us to places like This Columbarium… Plaque. This is a place where memories linger. Today, we will delve into the world of columbaria in Singapore. We will explore the cultural significance of these resting places.

This Columbarium… Plaque is a reminder of the broader practice ofurn storage in Singapore. After cremation, ashes find their final resting place in columbaria. These niches provide a secure and dignified memorial. They offer a dedicated space for loved ones to visit and pay respects.

Government-managed columbaria are a popular choice in Singapore. These include Mandai Columbarium, Choa Chu Kang Columbarium, and Yishun Columbarium. A standard niche costs about $500. A family niche costs about $900. These prices do not include the marble plaque or urn. If you want to choose a niche, there is a $250 selection fee. Otherwise, niches are allocated sequentially.

Mandai Columbarium is in the Central Catchment Area. It offers a serene environment surrounded by lush greenery. The still waters of Seletar Reservoir can be seen from its upper levels.

Choa Chu Kang Columbarium is arranged like a Chinese fan. This design allows for ample ventilation and natural light. Its blocks of niches are named after flowers. The scenery creates a peaceful atmosphere.

Yishun Columbarium resembles a Chinese temple. It is a traditional setting popular among Buddhists and Taoists.

Private temples also offer columbaria. These temples often host daily prayers and monk chanting. Cremation and ash storage costs vary among them. Examples include Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery and Tse Tho Aum Temple.

Private columbaria are another option. Niches here can be expensive, starting from thousands of dollars. Nirvana Columbarium and The Garden of Remembrance are examples.

Mount Vernon Columbarium was a significant columbarium complex. It was built in 1962 as a crematorium. Sadly, it closed in 2018 for redevelopment. It is being replaced by a new funeral parlor complex.

Mount Vernon’s history reflects the changing attitudes toward cremation. In 1974, plans were made to build a columbarium with 3000 niches. It opened in 1976. In 1981, an expansion added 7920 more niches. By 1987, a church-style building and a Chinese pagoda added 13230 niches.

In 2003, plans were announced to close Mount Vernon Columbarium. It would make way for future residential developments. The complex was replaced by one in Mandai.
