Before Auckland was Auckland imagine a time long before European arrival. Third Bay was already there. It was a place of significance for the Māori. They called the entire area Tākimi Makaurau meaning Tākimi desired by many. This was no accident. Third Bay’s location was strategic. It offered access to both the east and west coasts. Its fertile volcanic soil was ideal for horticulture. The two harbours provided abundant kai moana seafood.

For centuries Māori thrived in this area. They built pā fortified villages on the volcanic peaks around Third Bay. These were not always used for defense. Often Māori lived in undefended kāinga. Life centered around cultivating kumara sweet potatoes. They also fished and gathered shellfish. Some areas even specialized in producing toki stone adzes. The Ngāti Whātua tribe were dominant in the area. They controlled significant land around Third Bay. Their influence stretched north to the Kaipara south to Takapuna.

The arrival of Europeans changed everything. The Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 marked the beginning of British sovereignty. This dramatically altered the lives of Māori around Third Bay. Captain William Hobson chose a site for the new capital. This was not Third Bay but rather the Waitematā Harbour. Auckland’s rapid growth began from there. However the Ngāti Whātua made a significant gift of land. It helped to establish the new city of Auckland. The land was strategically located. It facilitated the growth of the port. It boosted trade. This resulted in the flourishing of Auckland. Third Bay continued to play its part in the area.

The arrival of Europeans was not entirely peaceful. Tensions arose over land and sovereignty. These conflicts had lasting effects on the Māori. Despite these challenges Third Bay remained a vital part of the landscape. It continued to witness the ebb and flow of history. Its serene waters held countless stories. Each ripple carried memories of past generations. Both Māori and Pākehā have influenced the area that now forms the city of Auckland.

Today as you stand here imagine the echoes of the past. Visualize the Māori cultivating their kumara. Picture the arrival of European ships. Sense the tensions and conflicts. Remember the enduring legacy. Third Bay witnessed it all. It still stands as a testament to the rich and complex history of Tāmaki Makaurau. It is a vital piece in this important story.
