On March 8 1963 a dream took root. Third Baptist Church of Chicago was born in Lelia Kenerson’s kitchen. Nine individuals including Reverend Elmer L Fowler gathered. They launched a church destined for greatness.

Third Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a beacon of hope. Reverend Fowler a civil rights advocate championed equality. He brought Black excellence to the congregation. Imagine meeting Dr Benjamin E Mays or Thomas A Dorsey. The church hosted legendary figures like Aretha Franklin. They even attended events at Orchestra Hall. These weren’t just names they were living examples of faith and achievement.

Their first service took place at John Foster Dulles School. Later they moved to the Chicago Baptist Institute. In 1964 they received the keys to their first building at 938 W 69th Street. This was a milestone for the growing church. It was a symbol of their perseverance.

After Reverend Fowler’s retirement in 1992 Reverend Dr Alan Vincent Ragland took the helm. He served for 26 years. His final sermon was titled “The Decrease That Increases”. A fitting tribute to a man who embodied humility and faith.

In 2018 Reverend Tyone D Hughes became the third senior pastor. He faced challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unforeseen obstacles. Yet he led with strength. Third Baptist delivered 42637 meals during the pandemic. They helped hundreds of families in need. Under his guidance Third Baptist secured its first six-figure grant. This helped renovate the church and Heritage Plaza.

Third Baptist’s story is one of resilience. It’s a story of faith overcoming adversity. It’s a testament to the power of community. It is a living example of a church that lives its values. It’s a legacy built on love and service. From humble beginnings in a kitchen it’s become a landmark. Third Baptist Church stands as a symbol of hope in Chicago. It continues its mission of service and faith.
