How about a stroll along Theydon Bois’s most iconic landmark, the Avenue of Trees? They stand tall on Loughton Lane. This is one of the village’s main roads.

Theydon Bois. It is a name whispered with a certain reverence by locals. They are proud of their village. It is a place where history and nature intertwine.

Let’s dive into the story of Theydon Bois. The latter part of the village’s name comes from the Bois family. They held the manor in the 12th and 13th centuries. The name might be French. Bois is pronounced to rhyme with choice or just boys.

The Great Eastern Railway once asked the clerk of the Epping Parish Council how to spell Bois. The clerk knew some French. He suggested Bois because of the village’s proximity to the forest.

Now, about this Avenue of Trees. The oak trees were planted in the 1830s. They were said to celebrate Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne.

Barbara Newman is the Chairwoman of the City of London’s Epping Forest Committee. She identified the Theydon Avenue as the highest priority. This is among the many avenues of trees that the City of London looks after.

A recent survey found that some trees needed felling. Others required monitoring. Inadequate management led to disease. Rapid death was likely for some trees.

Locals worried about the visual impact. A new line of trees was planted in late 2010. They were set back from the current row. The replacements will eventually dominate. The current generation may not see them reach full maturity.

Robert Glozier is the TBPC Chairman. He said that the Avenue of Trees is an intrinsic part of Theydon Bois. It has to be preserved for the short and long term. The best way is to have a parallel Avenue of Trees to take over.

Some new trees are sponsored as memorials. An information board will display details near the avenue.

Theydon Bois observes several yearly events. Of note is the annual Donkey Derby. It is usually held in July. Children participate in donkey racing. You can bet on it with small stakes. Individual races or donkeys can be sponsored. Sponsors can name the race or donkey. The day includes rides, games, stalls, and food. Profits benefit the Theydon Bois Scouts and Girl Guides.

Another tradition is Open Gardens Day. It is held in the summer. Local residents show private gardens to visitors.

Epping Forest borders Theydon Bois. It is an ancient woodland and former Royal Forest. The community is active in forest conservation. The Theydon Bois & District Rural Preservation Society was founded. It preserves the countryside around Theydon Bois.

Theydon Bois is more than just a village. It is a testament to community. It is a dedication to preserving natural beauty. As you wander, remember the stories. Remember the people who shaped this charming place. Theydon Bois will leave a lasting impression on you.
