In 1913, a seed was planted in Kingston Road. This seed, the County Upper Mixed Senior School, later blossomed into the Therfield School we stand before today. Therfield School has grown and evolved significantly over the years. Originally, it shared space with the County Infants’ School due to increasing student numbers. The 1944 Butler Education Act transformed it into Leatherhead County Secondary School. The transition to its current location on Dilston Road began in 1953. Interestingly, classes continued at the old site and even a United Dairies Depot until 1976. It was in 1976 that the school adopted its current name, Therfield School. This name honors Brian de Therfield, who was granted the land by King John in 1205 as part of the Manor of Pachesam. Therfield School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form. It even boasts a partnership with Willi Graf Gymnasium in Munich, Germany. The sixth form collaborates with other local schools like Ashcombe, Warlingham, and Oxted, offering a wide range of academic and vocational courses. Therfield School also has a rich history of supporting its students through various funding sources, including the Therfield School Trust Fund. Today, it’s an academy, receiving funding directly from the Department for Education. During a period from 2005 to 2008, Therfield specialized as a Sports College. It aimed to use sport to enhance overall school achievement. This focus emphasized developing leadership skills in both students and staff. The school is divided into four houses: Juniper, Leith, Polesden, and Norbury. These houses foster a sense of community and friendly competition in various activities. Therfield School’s facilities are impressive and available for hire. You can find everything from an Astroturf for hockey and football to a sports hall and gym. There are also tennis courts, classrooms, ICT suites, a library, and even cookery classrooms. Therfield School has continually adapted to the changing educational landscape. It strives to provide “The Best For All” – its motto – emphasizing excellence, leadership, and opportunity.
