Emperor Theodosius II completed the Theodosian Walls. Construction started in 404 under Emperor Arcadius. It lasted until 413. Earthquakes damaged the walls on multiple occasions. They were damaged September 25, 437, November 6, 447, and again in January 448. Attila the Hun threatened the city. Theodosius II ordered his praetorian prefect, Constantinus, to repair and strengthen the Theodosian Walls and towers. It took only 60 days.

The Theodosian Walls successfully defended the city against sieges. The Avars, Slavs, Sassanids, Arabs, Bulgarians, Rus’, Crusaders, and Ottomans all tried. However, there were three breaches. They were breached during the Latin Sack of Constantinople in April 1204. Also, they were breached when Alexios Strategopoulos retook Constantinople on July 25, 1261. Finally, Mehmed the Conqueror breached them during the Fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453.

Throughout most of the Ottoman Empire, the Theodosian Walls remained intact. Over time, the walls fell into disrepair. Sections were dismantled in the 19th century. In the 1980s, a restoration program began. Many sections were repaired and rebuilt. The Theodosian Walls are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Historic Areas of Istanbul.

The Theodosian Walls ran for 5.7 kilometers. They stretched from the Walls of Blachernae to the Marmara Sea. They consisted of inner and outer walls. A terrace separated them. A moat separated the outer wall by an outer terrace. There were nine main gates, smaller gates, and 192 towers.

The inner wall was thick and high. It had 96 towers. Each tower had a battlemented terrace. Most had two chambers inside. The outer wall was thinner and shorter. It also contained 96 towers. Only 62 of those towers survive today.

Between the walls was a terrace. It was wide. The outer wall and moat were separated by an outer terrace. It contained a paved road for troop movements. The moat was wide and deep. There was a wall on its inner side. It served as the first line of defense. Today, the moat and terraces are used as vegetable gardens.
