What echoes when you think of freedom and sacrifice? It’s Theodor Körner’s story. Here, before the Theodor-Körner-Denkmal, we remember a poet and soldier. He was a man who embodied the spirit of his age.

Theodor Körner was born in Dresden in 1791. He studied in Leipzig. He was a poet and a volunteer. He fought against Napoleon in the Lützow Free Corps. Körner’s life was short but impactful.

This monument honors Theodor Körner. He was more than just a writer. He was a symbol of German resistance against oppression. His words fueled the desire for freedom.

Körner studied philosophy, history, and natural sciences in Leipzig. He was expelled from the university. He had defended fellow students in a duel. On April 24, 1813, he wrote “Lützows wilde Jagd”. Carl Maria von Weber set it to music. This iconic song became a rallying cry.

In June 1813, Körner was severely wounded near Kitzen. He was cared for in Leipzig. A memorial plaque marks the spot on Huttenstraße 2.

The Körnerhaus in Großzschocher is also important. It is where Körner was hidden and cared for after being wounded. The Häußer family, who were gardeners, helped him. They dressed him in peasant clothes. They took him to Dr. Wendler in Leipzig by water.

Frau Häußer described Körner as wounded. He was covered in blood and dirt. She washed for three days. She could not remove the blood from his riding coat. He was a steadfast man. The surgeon stitched his head wounds.

Theodor Körner died in September 1813. He died in a battle against French troops. He did not survive the war.

Theodor Körner’s legacy lives on through his poetry and his courage. The Theodor-Körner-Denkmal serves as a reminder of his sacrifice. It reminds us of the ideals he fought for.

Another memorial to Körner exists. It is a plaque on the Opernhaus. The plaque marks where the Schneckenberg once stood. Here, Theodor Körner wrote “Das ist Lützows wilde verwegene Jagd.” The original plaque was made in 1935 by F. Zalisz. It was melted down in 1942 for the war effort. A replica was installed in 2000.

The words on the plaque read. “An dieser Stelle – dem früheren Schneckenberg – weilte Theodor Körner am 24. im Ostermond 1813 und schrieb sein berühmtes Lied ‘Das ist Lützows wilde verwegene Jagd’.”

Consider Theodor Körner’s impact as you stand here. He inspired a nation through his actions. His words continue to resonate. He was a true hero of his time. His spirit lives on in Leipzig. It lives on in the hearts of those who value freedom.
