The temple’s name Thekchen Choling means Great Mahayana Dharma Temple. It’s named after the 14th Dalai Lama’s monastery. Thekchen Choling wasn’t built from scratch. It was established at a site that was previously home to Ji Gong Temple. A statue of Ji Gong still remains a cherished part of the main hall. Devotees offer prayers and offerings to it.
Thekchen Choling is more than just a place of worship. It’s a dynamic center for spiritual growth and community outreach. Weekly teachings in English and Mandarin are held here. There are chanting and prayer sessions too. The temple celebrates Buddhist holidays like Vesak and Lunar New Year. It provides a haven for quiet prayer and meditation. It stands three meters high and contains 213 million mantras. Thekchen Choling houses sacred relics. These relics include those of Buddha Shakyamuni and his disciples. There are also relics of the 13th Dalai Lama and other significant Buddhist figures. The temple even houses the complete Kangyur and Tengyur texts the Tibetan Buddhist canon.
