Did Richelieu ever imagine the legacy he’d create, right here at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal? This theatre, nestled within the Palais-Royal, has witnessed centuries of dramatic transformations, echoing the ever-changing city outside its doors. Richelieu, the powerful cardinal, commissioned the Palais-Cardinal, later renamed Palais-Royal, in the 17th century. Within its walls, a theatre was born. This original theatre space was shared by Molière’s troupe and the Italian comedians, a vibrant mix of theatrical styles. After Molière’s death, his collaborator, Jean-Baptiste Lully, established a music academy here. Imagine the grandeur of the first performance of the opera-ballet “Les Indes Galantes” gracing this very stage in 1735. The Théâtre du Palais-Royal hasn’t always been known by its current name. It has been the Théâtre Beaujolais, the Théâtre Montansier, and even the Théâtre de la Montagne, reflecting the turbulent times it lived through. The theatre was rebuilt multiple times after devastating fires, each reincarnation adding a new layer to its rich history. In 1807, Napoleon’s decree drastically limited Parisian theatres. The Théâtre du Palais-Royal’s close proximity to the Comédie-Française forced Mademoiselle Montansier, its owner, to relocate. The theatre endured a period of banned comedies, hosting acrobats and dog shows instead. Its fortunes reversed after the July Revolution of 1830. Actor Dormeuil commissioned a complete rebuild, creating the Théâtre du Palais-Royal as we know it today. The inauguration in 1831 marked a new era of laughter and applause. The theatre became the stage for early successes of playwrights Eugène Labiche and Georges Feydeau, with works like “Un Fil à la Patte” and “The Italian Straw Hat” delighting audiences. Operettas flourished under Hervé, the father of the operetta, and Offenbach’s famous “La Vie Parisienne” premiered here. In 1880, architect Paul Sédille added the final touch of elegance, adorning the auditorium with lavish gilding and plush red velvet. Look closely at the exterior – the charming mosaic-covered emergency exits date from this renovation. From Mistinguett to Louis de Funès, the biggest names in French theatre have graced the Théâtre du Palais-Royal stage. The theatre continues to showcase French theatrical creations, blending classic farces with contemporary works.
