“Two stages, one theatre, a unique Parisian experience.” This statement perfectly describes the Théâtre 13, right here in the heart of the 13th arrondissement. The Théâtre 13 boasts a fascinating history, intertwined with the urban development of Paris. Established in 1981, it originally stood alone on Boulevard Auguste-Blanqui. The vision, spearheaded by Jean-Luc Jeener and his Compagnie de l’Elan, was to create a municipal theatre for the local community. The theatre quickly became a beacon of artistic energy, nestled within the bustling Cité Glacière.

But the Théâtre 13’s story doesn’t end there. As Paris transformed, so did the theatre. In the early 2000s, the city embarked on a massive project to revitalize the neglected ZAC8 Paris Rive-Gauche area. This once industrial wasteland was reborn as a vibrant hub of universities, residences, and businesses, crowned by the iconic Bibliothèque Nationale de France. In the midst of this urban renewal, a new theatre was envisioned. This new theatre, initially intended to be called the “Théâtre du Lierre”, was ultimately entrusted to the Théâtre 13, expanding its presence to two distinct locations within the 13th arrondissement.

The new venue, inaugurated in 2011, brought fresh challenges. How would audiences navigate between the two theatres located 30 minutes apart by foot and metro? To solidify their identities, the original venue became Théâtre 13 / Jardin and the new one, Théâtre 13 / Seine. But with the arrival of director Lucas Bonnifait in 2021, the names were further refined, becoming Théâtre 13 / Glacière and Théâtre 13 / Bibliothèque. This subtle shift cleverly linked each theatre to its respective metro station, making it easier for audiences to find their way.

Today, the Théâtre 13 stands as a testament to the dynamic evolution of Paris. Its two stages, each with its own unique character, showcase the diversity and vibrancy of modern French theatre. From its humble beginnings as a community theatre to its current status as a multi-disciplinary creative hub, the Théâtre 13 continues to champion emerging artists and engage audiences with thought-provoking and innovative performances. So, as you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the rich history and the enduring spirit of the Théâtre 13 – a true Parisian gem.
