Emerging from the whispers of history, the Theater in der Orgelfabrik stands as a testament to artistic ingenuity. Right here in Durlach, this unique venue began not as a theater, but as an organ factory. In 1987, a group of passionate artists saw the potential within the old organ hall’s unusual space. They recognized it as a place brimming with atmosphere, perfect for a new kind of theater. The Theater in der Orgelfabrik was born. This wasn’t just any theater. The founders envisioned a space dedicated to original works, a so-called “Autorentheater”. They wanted to develop plays specifically for this unique environment and the actors who would bring it to life. Over the years, the Theater in der Orgelfabrik has welcomed more than 40 actors and premiered 36 original plays. Initially, the productions were adaptations and translations. However, they evolved to take on a distinctive character. Playwrights began crafting stories inspired by historical figures and literary giants. They explored the lives of Georg Büchner, Caspar Hauser, and Casanova. They tackled themes ranging from “The Imaginary Invalid” to the Titanic’s tragic fate. They even delved into the chilling tales of “Uncle Adolf’s Money”, “House Frankenstein”, and “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde”. The Theater in der Orgelfabrik also developed a particular focus on adapting works by prominent German-language authors for the stage. This led to compelling productions of Franz Kafka’s “The Castle”, “The Metamorphosis”, and “The Trial”. In 2006, they presented a haunting rendition of Thomas Mann’s “Death in Venice”. The Theater in der Orgelfabrik continues to thrive, captivating audiences with its unique blend of history, originality, and artistic passion.
