Recycled and reclaimed materials formed a 110-seat amphitheatre. A bar and kitchen completed the picture. This wasn’t just bricks and mortar. The Yard’s impact is undeniable. Michaela Coel’s *Chewing Gum Dreams* began here. It later became a hit BBC show. The theatre has hosted everything from gender-swapped productions of *The Crucible* to premieres of Pulitzer Prize-winning plays like Clare Barron’s *Dirty Crusty*. Even a fully digital online performance day called *Yard Online*. The Yard adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic seamlessly. Moving its community and young people’s programs online.
The Yard isn’t just about theatre. Its nightlife is legendary. Collectives like INFERNO Pxssy Palace and GGI have all graced its stage. Its vibrant bar and kitchen use locally sourced ingredients. The Yard is integral to the rapid regeneration of Hackney Wick. A real diamond in the rough.
In 2024 The Yard received a significant boost. £700000 from Arts Council England’s Capital Investment Programme will fund major refurbishment and expansion. The Yard’s future looks bright.
