Ever wondered where musical history comes to life? The Wolfson Centre in Music & Material Culture is just behind me. It is a state-of-the-art research facility. Let me tell you its story.

The Wolfson Centre is part of the Royal College of Music Museum. It provides access to the college’s vast collections. These collections include musical instruments, paintings, and early prints. Drawings and sculptures are also available.

The Centre opened its doors to students and researchers in November 2022. This opening followed the retrieval of over 14,000 objects. These objects had been stored offsite. Now, they are readily accessible for study.

The Wolfson Centre plays a key role in the More Music project. The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Wolfson Foundation support this project. The Centre is equipped with climate-controlled storage units. This ensures the long-term protection of the collections.

Inside, a conservation workshop allows conservators to work on preserving historic objects. Both RCM and external conservators use this space. The Wolfson Centre provides space for object-based learning. These sessions focus on music from the 18th to 20th centuries. Students gain hands-on experience with the collections. They also learn various research methods.

A dedicated research and digitization space supports study visits. It also supports the creation of digital assets. Traditional photography is used. Emerging techniques like 3D scanning are also employed.

Richard Martin, the Digital and Documentation Officer, led the project. He noted the educational benefits the Wolfson Centre offers to the college and its students. The facility houses many of the Museum’s musical treasures.

Visitors to the Wolfson Centre can enjoy guided tours. These tours offer behind-the-scenes access. You’ll see seldom-seen rarities. You’ll also hear stories from music history.

The RCM Museum itself holds over 500 years of music-making. Here, you can explore priceless musical treasures. You can also attend special chamber performances. The Museum showcases instruments, portraits, and other fascinating items. These are chosen from the RCM’s collection of 14,000 items.

The Royal College of Music Museum is open to the public. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 10.15 am to 5.45 pm. It is also open Saturday to Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. The Museum closes for lunch between 1 pm and 2 pm on weekends.

The Wolfson Centre offers a unique way to engage with musical history. It provides resources for research, conservation, and education. It truly brings music’s past into the present. The Wolfson Centre stands as a testament to the Royal College of Music’s commitment. Its commitment is to preserving and sharing its musical heritage.
