What secrets does the Walled Obelisk hold? It stands here in Sultanahmet Square, a silent witness to centuries of history. The Walled Obelisk, also known as the Masonry Obelisk or Constantine’s Obelisk, is more than just a towering structure. It’s a time capsule, layered with stories of emperors, conquests, and the rise and fall of empires. The Walled Obelisk, originally constructed in the Hippodrome of Constantinople, likely during the Theodosian era, mirrors the Obelisk of Theodosius. It’s believed to have been built to emulate the Circus Maximus in Rome, which also boasted two obelisks. This shows how Constantinople’s rulers sought to connect their city with the prestige and power of Rome. In the 10th century, Emperor Constantine VII refurbished the Walled Obelisk. He coated it in gilt bronze and added an inscription. This inscription, in iambic trimeter, not only commemorated the restoration but also compared the obelisk to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Imagine the obelisk gleaming in the sun, a testament to the emperor’s power. Sadly, the Fourth Crusaders looted the gilt bronze in 1204, leaving the obelisk bare. The Walled Obelisk’s story doesn’t end there. Young Janissaries, eager to prove their skills, would climb the stonework, causing further damage. Despite its scars, the Walled Obelisk continues to inspire awe. It has even been featured on Turkish banknotes. The Walled Obelisk’s resilience is a reflection of Istanbul itself. A city that has weathered countless storms and still stands tall. Today, as you stand before the Walled Obelisk, you’re not just looking at stones. You’re looking at a living monument, a testament to human ambition, resilience, and the enduring power of history.
