Have you ever wondered how many ways there are to say “I love you”? At the Wall of Love, or “Le mur des je t’aime” as it’s known in French, you’ll find a staggering 311 ways to express this powerful sentiment. Nestled in the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre, this 40-square-meter wall is a testament to love’s universal language. The Wall of Love isn’t made of brick or stone, but of 612 enamelled lava tiles, each bearing the phrase “I love you” in a different language. From the common to the rare, languages like Navajo, Inuit, Bambara, and Esperanto are all represented here. The Wall of Love was the brainchild of artists Fédéric Baron and Claire Kito. Baron initially gathered over 1,000 “I love you”s in over 300 languages and dialects, going door-to-door and even visiting embassies. He then collaborated with calligrapher Claire Kito to select the most beautiful and melodic versions for the wall. The tiles on the Wall of Love are not just randomly placed. The dimensions of each tile match the pages of Baron’s notebooks where he collected the phrases. Sprinkled across the deep blue tiles are splashes of red, symbolizing fragments of a broken heart. These fragments, when visualized together, create a whole heart, a potent symbol of love’s power to unite and heal. The Wall of Love offers a beautiful backdrop to the Abbesses Metro station. It’s a place where lovers from around the world can rendezvous and find their language of love displayed proudly. The Wall of Love isn’t just a visual spectacle, it’s an interactive experience, inviting visitors to search for the phrase in their own language, or perhaps discover new ways to express their affection. So, next time you’re in Montmartre, make sure to visit the Wall of Love. Let it remind you of the beautiful and universal language that connects us all.
