In 1890, a phoenix rose from the ashes, not literally, but symbolically, right here at The University of Chicago. This university wasn’t the first to bear the city’s name. An earlier institution, beset by financial woes and a devastating fire, closed its doors in 1886. But from its demise, a new The University of Chicago emerged, thanks to the generosity of John D. Rockefeller and the American Baptist Education Society. The university opened its doors in 1892, in the Hyde Park neighborhood, on land donated by Marshall Field. Imagine the excitement of those first 594 students and 120 faculty members, including eight former college presidents. William Rainey Harper, the university’s first president, envisioned a place where knowledge would flourish, where both faith and reason could be explored. He established the Divinity School as the first professional school, followed by the business school in 1898 and the law school in 1902. The University of Chicago quickly gained a reputation for academic rigor, thanks to leaders like Harper and Robert Maynard Hutchins. The university embraced diversity from the start, welcoming both women and minorities when other institutions still shut them out. In fact, it was the first major university to enroll women on an equal footing with men and the first major, predominantly white university to offer a black professor a tenured position. The University of Chicago’s impact on the world extends far beyond its Hyde Park campus. The world’s first self-sustaining nuclear reaction took place here in 1942, under the watchful eye of Enrico Fermi, in a former athletic field now commemorated by a Henry Moore sculpture. From radiocarbon dating to groundbreaking work on the Manhattan Project, the university played a vital role in shaping the 20th century. Even in the arts, The University of Chicago’s influence is felt. Did you know that improvisational comedy was born here? The Compass Players, a student comedy troupe, paved the way for The Second City, which in turn launched the careers of countless comedic legends. So, as you stand on this historic campus, remember The University of Chicago’s remarkable journey from ashes to eminence, a testament to the power of education, innovation, and the enduring human quest for knowledge.
