The UK Firefighters National Memorial wasn’t always a national tribute. It began as a memorial to London firefighters. They lost their lives during the Blitz. The idea came from Cyril Demarne. He was a former chief officer of the West Ham Fire Brigade. He wanted to honor his fallen colleagues. He commissioned a small bronze maquette. This became the model for the larger memorial.
The initial sculpture was called ‘Blitz’. It depicted firefighters at work. Two figures are based on a photograph. It showed a relief crew working in Cannon Street. The other figure was modeled after Demarne himself. His colleagues recognized him instantly. They said you could tell it was him. It was from the way he stood. He always waved his arms when giving orders.
The memorial was unveiled in 1991. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother performed the unveiling. In 1998 the memorial was expanded. It now included firefighters from across the UK. This was a monumental change. It was fitting to remember all firefighters. It includes names of those who died in the line of duty. The Princess Royal rededicated it in 2003. A total of 1192 names were added.
