In 1880, The Tiffin Girls’ School first opened its doors to 150 eager students. The school was initially located in a shared building with the boys’ school near “The Fairfield,” now a cricket ground. The Tiffin Girls’ School owes its name to Thomas and John Tiffin, brewers who left funds for the education of the poor in the 17th century. Their legacy extended beyond scholarships, eventually leading to the creation of two separate schools: one for boys and, of course, The Tiffin Girls’ School. Originally called “The Tiffin’s Girls’ School,” the name was later modified to avoid confusion. After fifty years at their initial location, the school moved to its current location on Richmond Road in 1987, taking over the former site of The Tudor School. The Tiffin Girls’ School has a long and storied history, marked by both triumph and adversity. In 2003, a fire devastated a significant portion of the main building, a setback met by the community’s resilience and a successful fundraising campaign. The rebuilt wing now bears the name of Sandra Holdsworth, a former Chair of Governors. The school continued to grow, adding a drama studio in 2007 and a music studio in 2009. The Tiffin Girls’ School transitioned to academy status in 2011. Today, it serves approximately 1,200 students aged 11 to 18, divided into six houses named after former headmistresses. The school has a thriving house system with competitions and events contributing to a vibrant school community. The Tiffin Girls’ School maintains a strong academic focus. Students study a wide range of subjects. Entry is selective, based on rigorous Mathematics and English tests, prioritizing students within their catchment area. The Tiffin Girls’ School stands as a testament to the enduring power of education, a place where generations of young women have dared to be wise and shaped their futures.
