In 1625, four dragon tails twisted skyward. They formed the iconic spire of the Copenhagen Stock Exchange, or Børsen. King Christian IV envisioned Børsen as a symbol of Denmark’s growing economic power. He commissioned Lorenz van Steenwinckel to design this magnificent structure. Sadly, Steenwinckel passed away before seeing his vision realized. His brother, Hans, stepped in to complete the masterpiece in the Dutch Renaissance style. Børsen quickly became the heart of Danish trade. Merchants bustled in its halls, negotiating deals and building fortunes. The building’s distinctive spire watched over the city, a symbol of prosperity and resilience. For centuries, Børsen thrived as a center of commerce. It played a key role in the economic development of not just Denmark, but the entire Scandinavian region. It housed the Danish stock market until 1974. More recently, it served as the headquarters of the Danish Chamber of Commerce. Then, on April 16, 2024, tragedy struck. A fire, ignited during renovation work, ripped through the historic building. The iconic dragon spire, meant to protect Børsen from such a fate, succumbed to the flames and crashed down. The fire consumed nearly half the building. It destroyed centuries of history. Citizens, architects, and historians mourned the loss. Yet, amidst the devastation, a spark of hope remained. Quick-thinking staff, emergency workers, and even passersby rushed into the burning building. They rescued hundreds of historic artworks, including P.S. Krøyer’s famous painting, “From Copenhagen Stock Exchange.” While the physical structure suffered immense damage, the spirit of Børsen endured. Denmark vowed to rebuild, not just the building, but the legacy it represents. The Stock Exchange building stands as a testament to the resilience of the Danish people. It is a symbol of their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage.
