“What stories could this plaque tell?” I wonder. It marks the spot of The Sing Family in Austin. This plaque commemorates a family’s struggle and triumph. The Sing Family’s story is one of immigration, perseverance, and community support. It all started with Joe Sing.

Joe Sing was born Jo Feng Sheng in China in 1860. He immigrated to the United States around 1890. He sought to financially support his family. He settled in Austin and became one of the city’s first Chinese immigrants.

Sing opened Hong Lee Laundry at 311 W. 5th Street. He ran it with his wife Francis Moreno. Francis was a Mexican-American woman. Sadly she lost her U.S. citizenship for marrying a Chinese man due to discriminatory laws.

Life wasn’t easy for Chinese immigrants. They faced racism and harassment. Laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act blocked laborers from immigrating. Those already here were denied citizenship. This meant no voting rights and limited services.

Joe Sing obtained a Certificate of Residence. This document proved he had permission to be in the U.S. Regulations on Chinese immigrants were intensified by the Geary Act of 1892.

Despite these challenges Joe Sing thrived. He became a valued figure in Austin’s Chinese community. He supported other Chinese-owned businesses. Joe provided loans to businessmen denied funds elsewhere. He created a social support network. This helped those excluded by government agencies and charities.

Joe and Francis had four children: Rumalda, Joe Jr., Senovia, and Margaret. Margaret bought this property. She became the first homeowner in the family.

Joe Sing died in a car accident on November 30 1927. He was 67 years old. His legacy lives on through his family and community contributions. The Sing Family in Austin Plaque stands as a reminder. It honors their resilience and dedication. It reminds us of the challenges faced by early immigrants. It also highlights their vital contributions to Austin. The Sing Family’s story is a powerful chapter in Austin’s history.
