Have you ever wondered why the water in The Serpentine is so clean? The Serpentine is a beautiful lake in Hyde Park, London, England. It was created in 1730, by Queen Caroline, the wife of King George II. She was quite a character, wasn’t she? The Serpentine was one of the first artificial lakes created, and it was designed to look natural. This was a bold statement in a time when most artificial lakes were straight canals. The Serpentine is also known as the Serpentine River, but technically, only the eastern half of the lake is called the Serpentine. The western half is called the Long Water. The lake used to be fed by the River Westbourne and the Tyburn Brook. But when the River Westbourne became polluted, the water was then pumped from the Thames. Today, it is fed by three boreholes drilled deep into the Upper Chalk, providing up to 900,000 cubic meters of fresh water each year. It’s pretty amazing how this artificial lake was recreated with such a simple and effective solution. The Serpentine played a crucial role in the 2012 Olympic Games, hosting the triathlon and marathon swimming events. It’s also home to the Serpentine Swimming Club, which organizes a 100-yard race every Christmas morning, a tradition that started in 1864. These days, the Serpentine is a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike. People enjoy a leisurely walk along its banks, take a boat ride, or simply relax and enjoy the views. Enjoy The Serpentine, and learn about its fascinating history. You might even catch a glimpse of the Serpentine Swimming Club in action, braving the cold waters.
