Legend says this mosque defies gravity and birds. Here we are at the Şemsi Pasha Mosque. It is a jewel in Istanbul’s crown. This Ottoman mosque is in the densely populated Üsküdar district.

The Şemsi Pasha Mosque is one of Mimar Sinan’s smallest works. Its size and waterfront location make it attractive. The mosque blends architecture with nature.

Mimar Sinan designed it for Şemsi Pasha. Construction finished around 1580. They say Şemsi Pasha wanted a bird-free place. The mosque sits where northern and southern winds meet. This makes it hard for birds to land. Locals call it “the mosque where birds don’t land”. They also call it the “Asparagus Mosque”. This is due to the shape of its minaret.

The Şemsi Pasha Mosque complex aligns east to west. It faces the Bosphorus shoreline. The square mosque meets the coast at an angle. The donor’s mausoleum faces the water. Gardens overlook the Bosphorus. The madrasa surrounds it on two sides. A seawall forms the fourth side. People feel like they are in a picture gallery. They are looking at framed Bosphorus scenes.

Two gates lead into the complex. One faces land. The other faces the sea. The land gate opens to a cemetery. This cemetery is behind the mosque’s qibla wall. Generations of Şemsi Pasha are buried here.

The courtyard is shared by the Şemsi Pasha Mosque and madrasa. The mosque portico faces the madrasa arcade. Both have shed roofs and pointed arches. The portico was rebuilt in 1940. A single minaret rises above the prayer hall’s corner.

Inside, a dome tops the prayer hall. It measures about eight meters in diameter. Squinches transition to the dome. The prayer hall has nine windows with colored glass. A circular window sits above the mihrab. The marble mihrab features a muqarnas hood. The wooden minbar is a modern replacement.

The mausoleum connects to the prayer hall. It opens to the hall with a grilled archway. A mirror vault crowns the chamber. Three windows face the Bosphorus. Nine upper windows adorn colored glass. Decoration includes stalactite carvings and floral motifs.

The L-shaped madrasa has twelve domed cells. It also has a large classroom. An arcade fronts the cells and classroom. The classroom is surmounted by a dome. It has six windows. Each madrasa cell has two windows and shelving niches. The madrasa now houses a library since 1953.

The Şemsi Pasha Mosque is more than stone and mortar. It is a testament to Ottoman artistry. It is a peaceful retreat. It offers stunning Bosphorus views. Its unique history makes it a must-see in Istanbul.
