Established in 1863 by Dr. Gray, an Irish physician, the hospital was a direct response to the prevalent eye and ear diseases plaguing the then-burgeoning city. Dr. Gray was particularly moved by the plight of miners returning from the Victorian goldfields, often suffering from various eye and ear ailments. Initially known as the Eye and Ear Infirmary, the hospital started with a simple but powerful mission: to provide care for all, regardless of their financial situation. Patients could pay what they could afford. In 1961, almost a century after its humble beginnings, the hospital received Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth II, marking its official transition to the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital.
