Did Queen Charlotte ever imagine her secret larder would become a beloved pub? Here at The Queen’s Larder, tucked away on a quiet street near bustling Southampton Row, that’s exactly what happened. The Queen’s Larder overlooks the tranquil Queen Square. Its story begins in the early 1700s, around 1710, as a simple alehouse. It changed hands several times, from a stationer to a carpenter. Then, history took a turn. King George III, plagued by his infamous “madness,” resided in Queen Square under the care of Dr. Willis. His wife, Queen Charlotte, rented a cellar beneath the alehouse. This became her secret larder, stocked with delicacies to soothe the king’s suffering. The exact contents of this special diet remain a mystery. History tells us King George preferred simple meals like soft-boiled eggs and Yorkshire pudding. He even disliked sugar. Perhaps his “special diet” wasn’t so special after all. The treatments, whatever they were, didn’t cure him. Later, the alehouse transformed into a tavern. It was named The Queen’s Larder to honor Queen Charlotte’s devotion to her husband. Today, The Queen’s Larder is a cozy pub. It retains its historic charm with crimson benches and nooks. It’s a local favorite, a place where you can even bring your dog. The menu boasts classic British comfort food. Perhaps King George himself would have enjoyed a meal here.
