Beyond the wreaths and poppies, lies a story. The Poppy Factory in Richmond isn’t just a place of production. It’s a symbol of resilience, a testament to the enduring spirit of those who served. The Poppy Factory was founded in 1922 by Major George Howson MC. His vision was simple yet profound: to offer employment to wounded soldiers returning from the First World War. Initially, Major Howson doubted its potential, even writing to his parents, “I do not think it can be a great success, but it is worth trying.” He underestimated the power of his idea. The factory, initially located on Old Kent Road, quickly became a lifeline for veterans. By 1924, it employed 50 disabled veterans and had caught the attention of the Prince of Wales, who visited that November. They produced a staggering 27 million poppies that year. The demand for poppies and the factory’s mission outgrew the Old Kent Road location. In 1926, The Poppy Factory relocated to a disused brewery on Petersham Road in Richmond. The current Art Deco building, completed in 1933, stands on this very site. The Poppy Factory continues its mission of supporting veterans with health conditions across England and Wales. Inside these walls, the production team meticulously crafts remembrance wreaths by hand. They carry on the legacy of those first 50 veterans. The Poppy Factory in Richmond isn’t just a factory. It’s a living memorial. A place where remembrance takes shape and veterans find new purpose.
