Hidden within the bustling streets of George Town lies The Penang Baháʼí Centre, a beacon of unity and spiritual harmony. Our journey begins not within its walls, but amidst the fragrant spice markets and vibrant street art of Penang. In 1883, a Baghdad-born trader named Siyyid Muẓaffar Rúmí, arrived in Penang. He was on a business trip, trading ponies and gems. But fate had other plans. Rúmí’s encounter with Sheikh Omar Basheer al-Khalidi at the Acheen Street Mosque sparked the first seeds of the Baháʼí Faith in Penang. The Penang Baháʼí Centre stands as a testament to this early encounter, a place where the echoes of diverse cultures and faiths converge. Decades later, in 1957, two women, Jeanne Loria Frankel and her mother, Margaret Kelly Bates, found themselves in Penang. They were waiting for visas to the Cocos Keeling Islands. At the urging of Shirin Behjat Fozdar, a prominent advocate for women’s rights, they shared the Baháʼí teachings. A year later, in 1958, the first Local Spiritual Assembly in northern Malaya was formed at 42 Peel Avenue. This became the first Penang Baháʼí Centre. Among the founding members was Lily Jansz, a hairdresser whose salon, “Salon de Beaute,” became an unlikely hub for the burgeoning Baháʼí community. Lily’s salon attracted the wives of Penang’s elite. As she styled their hair, she also shared the teachings of Baháʼí. Her home later housed the Baháʼí Centre. It hosted children’s classes, Chinese teaching conferences, and even Baháʼí weddings. The Penang Baháʼí community’s contributions extended beyond its shores. They spearheaded the printing of early Baháʼí publications, distributing prayer books and posters worldwide. By 1963, they had established the largest Baháʼí library in Northern Malaysia. This library offered a wealth of resources to both Baháʼís and the general public. The Penang Baháʼí Centre, now located at 11-2-1 New Bob Centre on Jalan Gottlieb, continues this legacy. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity and the power of individual initiative to spread a message of hope and peace. The Penang Baháʼí Centre, a place of quiet reflection amidst the vibrant energy of George Town, invites all to explore the transformative power of unity.
