In 1885, a Catholic mission was established in Harlesden. This met the needs of the growing Irish population. Devotion to Our Lady of Willesden was rekindled. A new statue was blessed by Cardinal Vaughan in 1892.

From humble beginnings, the parish flourished. A beautiful Romanesque church opened in 1931. It served as both a parish church and a National Shrine. It was for Catholics in England.

Our Lady of Willesden experienced her greatest day in 1954. During the Marian Year, Cardinal Griffin crowned her statue. This event took place at Wembley Stadium. Ninety-four thousand people attended. Pope Pius XII declared Willesden the center of Westminster’s celebrations. Sixty thousand pilgrims visited the shrine that year.

Saint Josemaría Escrivá also visited. He reconsecrated Opus Dei to Mary here in 1958. Countless favors were reported by the faithful.
