Did you know that The Most Holy Trinity with St Barnabas started with a school? It was built even before the church itself. Let’s explore the story of this special place.
The Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built first in this area. It was consecrated in 1850. But before that, in 1847, its first Parish Priest David Lloyd built the school. He knew what was important. The school offered free education for 600 local children. It also served as the place for Sunday worship until the church was ready. Today the school is still excellent and welcomes 210 children. Staff, children and parents feel at home here. The school creates a strong community.
From the start, worship at The Most Holy Trinity emphasized the church’s Sacramental Life. This was known as Tractarian worship. During the Second World War, the building suffered damage. It struggled for over 20 years.
In 1954, something changed. The Church of St Barnabas was given to the local Greek community. The Most Holy Trinity took over the care of that parish. Some of St Barnabas’ furnishings were moved here. Afterward, the building was restored using government money. It was re-dedicated in 1960.
The church had a tall spire, which was unfortunately destroyed by bombs in the Second World War. Now we see a tower. The church is now Grade II listed.
Today The Most Holy Trinity with St Barnabas has a thriving congregation. At Parish Mass, the choir sings twice a month. Children actively participate in the worship. The church also has close ties with the school across the road. The school uses the church and hall daily. There is a weekly school Mass.
So here at The Most Holy Trinity with St Barnabas, we see a story of community. We see education and faith intertwined. We see resilience in the face of war and change. It is a place where everyone is welcome.
