Wow What vibrant colors! This is The Midway Mural. Right here in the heart of Saint Paul’s Hamline Midway neighborhood. It’s more than just a pretty picture. It’s a story waiting to be told. The Midway Murals project is a stunning transformation of a half-mile stretch of Snelling Avenue. This busy road was once overlooked its potential. Now it’s bursting with life and color thanks to four massive murals.
The project started with Jonathan Oppenheimer a University of Minnesota student. He envisioned a way to connect the neighborhood’s diverse residents and immigrant-owned businesses. He wanted to challenge the indifferent perception many held of the area. He dreamed of transforming the aging appearance of Snelling Avenue. The murals were meant to be more than decoration. They were a way to celebrate the community’s rich cultural tapestry.
Funding came from the John S and James L Knight Foundation and community partners. Oppenheimer even launched a successful Indiegogo campaign. Four talented artists were commissioned. Each created a unique mural reflecting the theme of “starting anew”. Their artwork captures the neighborhood’s ever-changing face. It showcases the stories of the immigrant-owned businesses that thrive here. Each mural tells a unique story. They are also a reflection of the neighborhood’s evolving identity.
Lori Green Greta McLain Eric Mattheis and Yuya Negishi poured their hearts into these creations. They collaborated with business owners and residents. They conducted community listening sessions. They learned about the hopes and dreams of the people who live and work here. The result? An outdoor museum of vibrant expressions of community. The murals represent the shared experiences and aspirations of the Hamline Midway.
Councilmember Russ Stark praised the project. He called it a great way to bring life and color back to this busy stretch of Snelling Avenue. The murals even changed the route of Afeworki Bein owner of Snelling Cafe. He now takes a detour to admire the art daily. He along with many of his customers are enthusiastic about the project. It has brought a renewed sense of pride to the neighborhood.
The Midway Murals are so much more than just art. They’re a powerful statement. They demonstrate the unifying effect of art. They show how artistic collaborations can foster economic development and community engagement. They are a symbol of hope for a brighter future. A future where diversity is celebrated. Where businesses thrive. And where the community comes together in a shared sense of pride. The Midway Murals are a testament to the power of art to transform a community. They are a true masterpiece. Let’s take a closer look at each individual mural.
