Picture this. You’re standing at the gateway to golfing history. Welcome to The Metropolitan Golf Club. This isn’t just any golf course. It’s a Melbourne landmark a prestigious private club steeped in tradition. Established in 1908 its story is interwoven with the rich tapestry of Australian golf.

The Metropolitan Golf Club’s origins are surprisingly connected to the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. When Royal Melbourne relocated its original Caulfield course members who remained formed a new club. They purchased a farm in Oakleigh and in 1908 they moved to their new course. Club member JB MacKenzie designed this magnificent course. Think of the meticulous planning the vision required to create a course of this caliber.

The Metropolitan Golf Club boasts a course considered among the finest in Australia. It’s renowned for its immaculate condition. Greg Norman himself once described its couch grass fairways as the best he’d ever played on. The bentgrass greens are legendary large firm and fast. They’re even hand-mown to the very edge of the greenside bunkers. Imagine the dedication to maintain such pristine perfection. There are 103 bunkers on the course. Almost every hole is bordered by native Australian trees. These provide shelter for a variety of birds including the noisy but beautiful sulphur-crested cockatoo and the rainbow lorikeet.

This isn’t just a pretty course. The Metropolitan Golf Club has hosted some of the most prestigious tournaments in golfing history. Seven Australian Opens have been played here. The Australian PGA Championship has graced these fairways five times. It also hosted the 2001 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Sixty-four of the world’s top golfers competed for a US$5 million prize. In 2009 the Women’s Australian Open was celebrated here. This marked a century of play at this remarkable location. Think of the legendary golfers who’ve walked these very greens. Their shots their victories their defeats are all part of the history you’re standing on today.

So breathe in the history. Feel the prestige. You are at The Metropolitan Golf Club a place where golfing excellence meets unwavering tradition. A place where the echoes of champions still resonate on every perfectly manicured green. Enjoy your visit.
