What’s in a name? For The Mercury Mall in Romford, quite a bit. The Mercury Mall, as we know it today, has gone through a fascinating transformation. It wasn’t always shimmering under its iconic glass dome. The Mercury Mall first opened its doors in June 1990 as Liberty 2. This name was a nod to its older sibling, The Liberty Shopping Centre. The early days of The Mercury Mall, then Liberty 2, saw a vibrant mix of shops and leisure activities. Shopping occupied the first two floors. The third floor housed a nightclub, cinema, and bingo hall, offering a diverse experience. The initial anchor tenant was Sainsbury’s. When Sainsbury’s moved to The Brewery, Wilko took over the supermarket space. The Odeon Cinema closed in 2001 after The Brewery opened but was later revived in 2012 as Premiere Cinemas. Interestingly, it was known as the cheapest multiplex cinema in the UK at that time. The Mercury Mall’s story took another turn in 2006. The adjacent Dolphin Centre was redeveloped and integrated into the mall. This expansion brought in a new anchor tenant, Asda. This redevelopment also included housing built above the supermarket. This marked the transition from the Liberty 2 branding to The Mall Fund’s corporate identity. The Mercury Mall’s distinctive architecture and central location made it a popular filming location. You might have spotted its lifts in the Reebok “Belly’s gonna getcha!” advert. It has also been featured in shows like “Bad Robot’s” and “Off Their Rockers”. Ownership changed hands again in 2011, when Rockspring UK and The Other Retail Group acquired the mall. This marked the official rebranding as The Mercury Mall. The mall’s story took a spooky turn in 2013, serving as the backdrop for the horror movie “Death Walks”. Fast forward to 2017, and The Mercury Mall embraced the arts, becoming the home of the Romford Film Festival. The festival showcases movies at the Premiere Cinema for five to six days each May or June. Today, The Mercury Mall continues to be a vital part of Romford’s retail landscape. Its striking glass dome remains an iconic local landmark.
