Picture this a grand opera house bustling with life. This is the site of the Manila Grand Opera House plaque. Here stands a testament to a magnificent building long gone. It tells the story of the Manila Grand Opera House a theater that once captivated Manila.

The Manila Grand Opera House wasn’t always a grand opera house. It began in the mid-19th century as H T Hashim’s National Cycle Track a simple circular wooden structure with a nipa roof. Imagine the sounds of bicycles instead of opera singers.

In 1890 it transformed into the Teatro Nacional. Russian circuses and American theater companies performed here. The building’s metamorphosis continued. In 1902 after extensive remodeling and expansion by L Balzofiore it became the Manila Grand Opera House. This was timed for the visit of the Compania de Opera Italiana a grand event marking a new era for the venue.

The Manila Grand Opera House hosted more than just opera. It was a vital part of Philippine culture. It hosted the inauguration of the First Philippine Assembly on October 16 1907. This historic political event cemented its place in history. The Manila Symphony Society gave its first concert here in 1926. The renowned plays of Claro M Recto La ruta de Damasco and Solo entre las sombras were also staged here. The building even served as a meeting place for socialist and communist parties. In 1938 they officially merged forming the Communist Party of the Philippines.

The Manila Grand Opera House became a hub for entertainment. Pilita Corrales Elizabeth Ramsey Bayani Casimiro and Bobby Gonzales all graced its stage. It even held balagtasan operas concerts and bodabil performances. Think of the vibrant energy the lively crowds. The sheer volume of performances. The Manila Grand Opera House was truly a theater with a history as it was famously dubbed.

World War II brought devastation. Floods and a fire in 1943 and 1944 severely damaged the theater. Toribio Teodoro the shoe king of the Philippines owned it during the Japanese occupation. His home and factory were seized. Despite this hardship the Manila Grand Opera House was rebuilt after the war. It continued to provide daily entertainment. Admission was only 85 centavos.

However the rise of television and cinema led to its decline. By the late 1960s it was no more. The Manila Grand Opera Hotel now stands on the site. It’s a tribute to the past. The hotel features a mural of photographs. They depict the grand events and performers from the original theater. The plaque before us is the last physical reminder of the Manila Grand Opera House a place where history and entertainment intertwined.
