Can you imagine attending school in a one-room log cabin? The Little Red Schoolhouse, nestled here in Willow Springs, replaced just such a cabin in 1886. This charming building isn’t just a picturesque landmark. It is a living testament to the history of education in the Palos Hills. The Little Red Schoolhouse served generations of children. It stands as a reminder of a simpler time when the three R’s ruled the school day. Originally, the schoolhouse was located on the Black Oak Trail near old 99th Street. Imagine children traversing those country lanes to reach their lessons. In 1932, a resourceful local resident moved the entire structure to Camp Kiwanis, using only horses and log rollers. The schoolhouse continued its educational mission there until 1948. Then, in 1952, The Little Red Schoolhouse journeyed again to its current location. It reopened in 1955, not as a traditional school, but as a nature center. This “new kind of school” still educates, but now the lessons are about the natural world. The Little Red Schoolhouse has delighted generations of families with exhibits, live animals, and trails.
