Beneath the sprawling expanse of Hampstead Heath lies a secret world of watery wonder. We are standing at The Lake, or rather, the Hampstead Heath Ponds. These ponds are not just any bodies of water. They are a series of around thirty distinct aquatic habitats, each with its own unique story.

Originally dug in the 17th and 18th centuries, these ponds served a crucial purpose. They were reservoirs created to quench London’s ever-growing thirst. The River Fleet’s headwater springs fed them. Imagine Londoners relying on these very waters centuries ago.

Today, the Hampstead Heath Ponds are divided into two main groups. There are three Hampstead Ponds on the West Heath side. Then there are eight Highgate Ponds on the East Heath side. Each pond is numbered, starting from the south. Hampstead no. 1 is the southernmost pond. Highgate no. 8 sits furthest north near Kenwood House.

Among these, three ponds offer something special. They are designated for freshwater bathing. Highgate no. 2 is for men only. Highgate no. 5 is exclusively for women. Hampstead no. 3 welcomes mixed bathing. Can you imagine taking a dip in these historic waters?

But swimming isn’t the only activity here. Highgate no. 3 is a Model Boating Pond. Anglers find their peace at several other ponds. Some ponds are havens for wildlife. Others are purely ornamental. The Viaduct Pond is a prime example.

In 2004, these ponds faced an unexpected threat. The City of London Corporation tried to close them. They cited financial concerns and health risks. But swimmers fought back and won in the High Court. A fee was introduced to help cover costs.

The Hampstead Heath Ponds have attracted many famous faces over the years. Novelist Esther Freud, politician Ed Miliband, and journalist Dolly Alderton are some of the regulars. Actors Emma Corrin and Benedict Cumberbatch have enjoyed these waters too. Even singer Harry Styles has taken a dip.

In recent years, work has been done to improve the safety of the dams. These works ensure the structural integrity of the ponds. They also mitigate potential flood risks.

The men’s and women’s ponds are located off Millfield Lane on the eastern side of the park. The mixed bathing pond is a short walk from Hampstead Heath railway station.

Interestingly, the Highgate Men’s Pond was once a gathering spot for gay men. Today, these ponds are a space of inclusivity. Transgender women are welcome at the women’s pond, in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

The Hampstead Heath Ponds are more than just a collection of water bodies. They are a testament to London’s history. They are a haven for nature. They offer a space for recreation and relaxation. They embody the spirit of community. So, take a moment to appreciate the tranquil beauty and rich history that surrounds you here at The Lake.
