Awakening in the vibrant city of Davao, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ began as a humble prayer house on Villamor Street in Agdao. Now, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ stands as a testament to its founder, Apollo Quiboloy, the self-proclaimed “Appointed Son of God”. The Kingdom of Jesus Christ, officially known as the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name, Inc., is a nontrinitarian Restorationist church. Its roots trace back to September 1, 1985, when Quiboloy, a former member of the United Pentecostal Church of the Philippines, embarked on a new spiritual path. He established the Kingdom of Jesus Christ after a series of disagreements and expulsions from his former church. Quiboloy’s followers, often referred to as “Kingdom citizens,” believe that salvation is found exclusively within their community. This belief sets them apart from mainstream Christian doctrines. The Kingdom of Jesus Christ has faced controversies and accusations, with critics labeling it a cult. Quiboloy himself has been indicted in the United States on charges of sex trafficking and abuse. Despite these controversies, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ claims a global membership of eight million. However, external sources estimate a significantly smaller membership, ranging from 5,000 to 8,000 worldwide. The church’s influence extends beyond its religious practices. It is linked to organizations like the Children’s Joy Foundation, which claims to provide humanitarian aid to children in need, and the Sonshine Philippines Movement, involved in environmental and disaster relief efforts. The Kingdom of Jesus Christ also operates its own media network, Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI). In 2024, the Philippine government initiated investigations into the church, its founder, and SMNI News Channel, alleging several violations, including the sexual exploitation of children. This led to raids on the church compound in Davao City and Quiboloy’s subsequent arrest. The Kingdom of Jesus Christ continues to be a subject of intense scrutiny. Its story is one of both fervent belief and troubling allegations, leaving a complex legacy in the Philippines.
