Chugga chugga chugga. The sound of miniature engines fills the air. Welcome to the Ickenham Miniature Railway a delightful world of model trains.

Since 1970 this charming railway has been delighting visitors young and old. It’s owned and operated by the Ickenham & District Society of Model Engineers a group of dedicated enthusiasts. They built this miniature marvel in the heart of Ickenham.

As you step onto the grounds you’ll see Ickenham St Giles Station. It’s the main passenger terminus with one arrival and two departure platforms. Trains arrive unload passengers and then head to the turntable. This ingenious device turns the whole train around. It’s then sent to a departure platform ready for its next journey.

Nearby is the booking office. You buy your tickets there before boarding. Trains depart every few minutes. The journey takes you past the signal box a crucial part of the railway’s operation.

The Main Line has two circuits sharing a common section past the signal box. It’s a busy spot indeed. There’s also a loop line leading to the steaming bay where the locomotives are prepared.

Our train usually follows the outer circuit. After passing the signal box a second time it travels the inner circuit through a long tunnel. Finally it returns to the station. The journey is controlled by signal boxes ensuring smooth operation.

The railway uses 3 1/2 inch and 5 inch gauge tracks. This accommodates models built to different scales a testament to the model engineers’ skill and dedication. Admission is free. Rides cost just £1 per person.

The Ickenham Miniature Railway is a unique experience. It’s a testament to the passion and craftsmanship of the Ickenham & District Society of Model Engineers. So hop aboard for a miniature adventure. You won’t regret it.
