From “failing school” to “Outstanding,” The Hurlingham Academy’s journey is truly remarkable. Here, on Peterborough Road, stands a testament to resilience and transformation. The Hurlingham Academy, originally built in 1956 for the Hurlingham School girls, has seen its share of ups and downs. The original structure was designed by Sheppard Robson & Partners for the London County Council. In 1982, it merged with the Chelsea School for boys, becoming a co-educational institution. This marked a significant change, merging two distinct school communities into one. The Hurlingham Academy, however, faced numerous challenges in the following years. It was labeled a “failing school” in 1994. Later that year, it was cleared. Then again, in 2004, it fell under special measures. Yet, The Hurlingham Academy persevered. A proposal for closure in 2006 was withdrawn. By 2008, The Hurlingham Academy had earned recognition as London’s most improved school for GCSE achievement. In 2014, under the sponsorship of United Learning, it became The Hurlingham Academy. The partnership with United Learning and the clustering with The Elms Academy in 2017 proved beneficial. They shared resources and expertise, further propelling The Hurlingham Academy’s progress. The efforts culminated in a remarkable achievement. In 2024, Ofsted rated The Hurlingham Academy “Outstanding.” This prestigious rating signifies the incredible journey of a school that refused to give up. The Hurlingham Academy’s story is an inspiring example of how dedication, strong leadership, and community support can turn challenges into opportunities.
