Here it is folks. The Horn.
Have you ever seen a sculpture that embodies community spirit? This is it. The Horn is more than just a monument. It’s a symbol of partnership and progress.
Back in 2016, Medtronic and the Minnesota Vikings unveiled this stunning piece of contemporary art. It sits right here on Medtronic Plaza. That’s just outside the U.S. Bank Stadium. Medtronic funded it privately. Alliiance, a Minneapolis design firm, designed it.
The Horn’s design features two spiraling ribbons that entwine. They reflect Medtronic’s message of “Further, Together.” The inner surfaces of these ribbons are polished mirrors. They reflect the faces of everyone who comes here.
Look closely. The shape of the spirals represents the Gjallarhorn. Vikings fans know it well. It’s sounded before every home game. This sculpture is huge. It’s about 107 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 25 feet high. It weighs over 38 tons.
It’s made from structural tube steel and plate steel framing. You can see the mirror finish stainless steel and painted metal panels. Embedded LED lighting makes it glow at night.
Ross Naylor from Alliiance said they were honored to design a monument. It embodies Medtronic’s commitment to the community. Rob Clark from Medtronic hoped everyone enjoys the sculpture.
Kevin Warren, Vikings Chief Operating Officer, believed The Horn would become a gathering spot. He hoped it would create lasting memories for fans at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Medtronic’s 10-year partnership with the Vikings is significant. It includes sponsorship of Medtronic Plaza. This three-acre area is a gateway between downtown Minneapolis and the stadium. Medtronic also sponsors a community service program with the Vikings. Plus, there is the Medtronic Club inside the stadium.
Medtronic Plaza is a vibrant place. People meet and celebrate here. They come before and after games, concerts, and other events. The Horn stands as a centerpiece of this activity.
The Gjallarhorn has roots in Norse mythology. It was associated with Heimdalr. He was the god of dawn and light. So The Horn isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a nod to Vikings tradition and community connection. It’s a point of pride for Minneapolis.
