Masjid Muhajirin holds a special place in Singapore’s history. Opened in 1977 it was the first mosque built in Toa Payoh town. Back in the late 1960s the Persatuan Kebajikan Muslim Toa Payoh aimed to help disadvantaged families. From 1971 this society and community volunteers worked tirelessly. They raised funds through house-to-house collections and donations. Hawkers, businesses, and charity sales all helped. These efforts covered about half of the construction cost almost $900000.
Originally Masjid Muhajirin featured a distinctive design. It had an onion-shaped dome atop its minaret. This design reflected Persian-Indian architectural influences. In 2009 the mosque was rebuilt as part of the Singapore Islamic Hub development.
