Imagine the Great Fire of London raging through the city in 1666. The Guild Church of Saint Benet was engulfed in flames. Yet from those ashes, a new church arose.

The Guild Church of Saint Benet has a rich history. It stretches back to 1111 when it was dedicated to St Benedict. Over time, it became known as St Benet’s Paul’s Wharf.

This church stands as a testament to resilience and rebirth. Christopher Wren redesigned The Guild Church of Saint Benet. It reopened in 1683. Wren gave Londoners a new church after the devastating fire.

But even before the Great Fire, The Guild Church of Saint Benet played a role in history. Baynard’s Castle stood to the west of the church. Queen Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey may have received their last rites here. They would have then left for their executions at the Tower of London.

Since 1556, The Guild Church of Saint Benet has been the official church of the College of Arms. Many officers of arms have been buried within its walls. Inigo Jones himself was buried in the original church. He rests beside his mother and father.

The Guild Church of Saint Benet narrowly escaped demolition in the late 19th century. It was saved and given to Welsh Anglicans. Today, it serves as London’s Metropolitan Welsh church. Services are held in Welsh.

Look closely at the exterior. It’s crafted from dark red brick. Portland stone accents the corners. The tower stands to the northwest. It is capped with a lead dome, lantern, and spire.

Step inside The Guild Church of Saint Benet. Notice the square interior. The ceiling is flat, unlike many Wren churches. The north gallery once served Doctors’ Commons. Now, it’s used by the College of Arms.

Marvel at the original 17th-century furnishings. Grinling Gibbons designed the altar table, reredos, and pulpit. The lectern and baptismal font are also original. Corinthian columns support the galleries.

Consider Henrietta Hobart’s wedding. She married Charles Howard here in 1706. Henrietta later became the mistress of King George II.

The Guild Church of Saint Benet remarkably survived World War II unscathed. It is one of only four City of London churches to do so.

The Guild Church of Saint Benet stands as a symbol of faith. It represents architectural brilliance and historical significance. From its humble beginnings to its survival through fire and war. It connects us to London’s past. It offers a unique Welsh Anglican presence in the city.
