Lost in the labyrinthine streets of East London, you’ll find The Good Shepherd Mission. It stands as a testament to centuries of resilience and compassion. The story of The Good Shepherd Mission began not in this very structure, but in a humble workshop. In 1856, passionate teachers, determined to continue their Sunday school lessons after the closure of their previous location, sought refuge in this modest space. They called it “The Good Shepherd School.” The school thrived, but its early years were marked by displacement, forced to relocate three times in less than a decade due to the relentless growth of the city. Finally, in 1866, a dedicated building on Mape St. provided a stable home. It wasn’t long, however, before progress came knocking again. This time, it was the expansion of the Great Eastern Railway that demanded their relocation. In 1872, The Good Shepherd found its current home on Three Colts Lane. The new building, larger and more permanent, bore a message etched in stone: “to the glory of God and for the welfare of this neighbourhood.” This inscription became more than just words; it became the guiding principle for generations to come. Throughout the tumult of the 20th century, through two World Wars and rapid societal changes, The Good Shepherd Mission remained a steadfast beacon of hope. The mission provided shelter during air raids, opened its doors to those displaced, and even supervised bomb shelters. Today, the legacy continues. The Good Shepherd Mission stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community, a place where the spirit of the Good Shepherd continues to guide and inspire.
