Imagine gazing up at a simulated night sky. That’s the magic of The Ghana Planetarium. It stands as a beacon for science and astronomy enthusiasts. This is the first and only planetarium in Ghana and West Africa. It is one of the few digital planetariums on the African continent.

The Ghana Planetarium is located behind the Ghana Police Headquarters in Cantonments, Accra. The Planetarium is open all year. The dream of Dr. Jacob and Jane Ashong came to life here. This retired couple used their pension funds to construct The Ghana Planetarium in 2009.

The Ghana Planetarium officially opened on January 22nd, 2009. The British High Commissioner, Dr. Nicholas Westcott, graced the event. Distinguished guests included the French Ambassador and the Chief of Nungua. The British Council Director was also in attendance. Dave Weinrich from Minnesota also attended. His support made this ambitious project possible.

The Ghana Planetarium offers extracurricular support for maths and science topics. It raises awareness of environmental issues. The Planetarium has a full-dome planetarium show. Hands-on demonstrations bring science to life. Everyday and waste materials are mainly used for the shows.

The Planetarium’s summer hut features astronomy-themed posters. These posters show the sizes of the sun and planets. They depict space rocks and planetary rings. An infographic shows the solar system and space exploration. Information about the Milky Way and other galaxies is displayed. A richly detailed poster shows the electromagnetic spectrum.

The Planetarium Science Centre also offers workshops for teachers. Outreach visits to schools are conducted. Astronomy-themed art and craft activities take place at family events. Lectures and discussions are held at Astronomical Society meetings. Dome-casts with other planetariums abroad occur here. Recently, a robotics club for children was founded.

Interactive science exhibits are being constructed on the grounds. Astronomy fun days and competitions for children are planned. Astronomy outreach across the country will use a mobile planetarium. Astronomy teacher training will be provided. “Build your own telescope” sessions and “Galileoscope” kits will be available. The Planetarium compiles local names of constellations. It gathers local myths and stories about the heavens.

The Ghana Planetarium encourages scientific thinking. It makes science education more creative innovative and practical. The maximum capacity of the dome is around 40 people. Special events for the public include planetarium shows. Astronomy film shows and telescope viewing sessions are held. The Ghana Astronomy and Observation Association holds regular meetings at The Ghana Planetarium.

The Ghana Planetarium accepts group bookings only. A variety of shows are available. Shows depend on the age range and interests of the group. Once a hub of scientific discovery it inspires generations. It encourages them to look up at the stars and dream about the wonders of the universe.

As you leave The Ghana Planetarium consider the importance of preserving our cultural and scientific heritage. May it rekindle the spark of curiosity about the universe. May it inspire generations to look up at the stars and dream once again.
