“Did you know that Mount Sinai Methodist Church in Accra has roots stretching back to the very beginnings of Methodism in Ghana?” I ask you. The story of Mount Sinai Methodist Church is intertwined with the broader history of the Methodist Church Ghana itself. It all began in 1835.

Dedicated local Christians formed an alliance. They connected with the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. These local believers needed help understanding the Bible. They requested assistance from missionaries.

Early missionary work faced serious obstacles. Many envoys succumbed to diseases like malaria. But in 1835, Reverend John Dunwell arrived. He was the first missionary to dock at the Gold Coast. Reverend Thomas Birch Freeman followed. He pushed for the faith to spread. He targeted the Ashanti Region and other areas.

The church gained popularity. It operated as a district under British rule. Reverend Thomas was replaced by William West. The church expanded into modern Accra. It even reached Nigeria.

Major transformations occurred in 1991. The church adopted a new biblical pattern of Episcopacy. The head title changed from “president” to “preceding bishop.” “District chairman” became “diocesan bishop.” Lay chairpersons assisted both bishops.
