Time stood still. The Evanston Galleria stood before me a majestic reminder of a bygone era. Its elegant façade hinted at stories of wealth and grandeur.

The Evanston Galleria wasn’t always known by that name. Once it proudly bore the Marshall Field’s moniker. Imagine the bustling crowds shoppers eager to experience the luxury of this 17th-century French Renaissance-style building. It was a landmark in the heart of Evanston. A place where the city’s elite came to see and be seen.

Construction began in 1929. The building became a symbol of prosperity in a booming city. The wealthy flocked to its doors. However changing times brought new challenges. The rise of suburban malls led to Marshall Field’s closing its doors in the 1980s. The iconic store was eventually sold. It was transformed into apartments. Then in 2002 those apartments became the condos we see today. The Evanston Galleria.

Yet the spirit of Marshall Field’s remains. The building’s restoration was meticulous. Much of the original character was preserved. The exterior marble and limestone gleam. The bronze and brass metalwork shines. The original terrazzo floors have been restored to their former glory. Most impressive is the restored Marshall Field & Co. clock. It ticks steadily a testament to the building’s enduring legacy. Even the elevators retain their original design. New chandeliers and gold-leaf borders add modern elegance. The lobby and hallways showcase the original Art Deco style. The “M” pattern stenciled on the borders is a detail taken from the marble trim above the old elevators. It’s a wonderful touch.

The Evanston Galleria is more than just condos. It’s a living piece of Evanston’s history. A beautiful blend of the past and the present. A testament to careful restoration and the enduring allure of classic architecture. It’s a place where you can almost hear the echoes of shoppers from a bygone era. A place that continues to thrive in the heart of the city.
