The Forney Messenger was founded way back in 1896. This marker, created by the Texas Historical Commission in 1986, was put in place to recognize its significance. Founded by M. J. Cox, the first issue of this influential paper was packed with local happenings. It had everything from personal anecdotes to news from surrounding communities.
The paper had a bit of a shaky start. In 1919, it merged with another local paper, “The Forney News.” Together, they were known as “The Forney News and Messenger” for a short time. Then, in 1921, it went back to its original name, “The Forney Messenger.” This little piece of history tells us that the people of Forney really appreciated their local newspaper, and that even though the paper went through some changes, its dedication to the area stayed strong.
