Wow. Look at this incredible building. This is Die Neue Sammlung The Design Museum. It’s not just a museum it’s a living testament to design history.

Die Neue Sammlung The Design Museum wasn’t always this grand. It began in the early 20th century a response to modern innovations. Munich artists and designers spearheaded this movement. They wanted a museum showcasing contemporary applied arts. This countered the 19th-century arts and crafts museums. The Munich Association for Applied Arts formed in 1903. They aimed to gather exemplary objects. These objects reflected design’s focus on industrial advancements and modernist principles.

Officially founded in 1925 Die Neue Sammlung initially resided within the Bavarian National Museum. It was then called the Department of Industrial Art. In 1929 it adopted its now famous name Die Neue Sammlung. This name perfectly reflected its focus on new and innovative designs. The museum’s early acquisitions form the foundation of its impressive collection today. Think Wiener Werkstätte Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design. Major companies like AEG Braun and Olivetti also contributed.

The museum’s move to the Pinakothek der Moderne in 2002 was transformative. It allowed for a comprehensive permanent exhibition. Visitors can now fully appreciate the breadth of its collection. Die Neue Sammlung boasts 23 collection areas. This includes everything from graphic design and furniture to ceramics jewelry and even sporting goods. It’s truly remarkable.

One of the highlights is the Futuro house a design icon of the Space Age. Designed by Matti Suuronen it’s an ellipsoid plastic house originally conceived as a ski hut. It’s outside the Pinakothek der Moderne a testament to the museum’s dedication to showcasing iconic designs.

Die Neue Sammlung The Design Museum is more than a collection of objects. It’s a journey through design history. It shows how design influences our lives our work and our thoughts. It’s an exemplary museum truly deserving of your time and attention. Don’t miss it.
