From the ashes of feudal jurisdiction, the Curia of Hungary rose. It stands before you, a testament to centuries of legal evolution. The Curia of Hungary has witnessed the ebb and flow of power, the clash of empires, and the birth of a modern nation.

The Curia of Hungary traces its roots back to the Kingdom of Hungary. It has been shaped by figures like King St. Stephen, whose legal codes established a foundation for the country’s judicial system. The Curia’s centralized power waned after the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526, giving way to local feudal courts. However, the judicial reforms of 1723 breathed new life into the institution. The Curia, comprised of the Table of Seven and the Royal Table, became a permanent fixture in Pest.

Further restructuring occurred in 1869, when the Curia was divided into the Court of Cassation and the Supreme Tribunal. These two bodies were later merged in 1882, solidifying the Curia’s role as the highest judicial authority in Hungary. The Curia we see today, the “Igazságügyi palota”, located on Markó Street, was designed by Alajos Hauszmann. Its construction, completed just in time for the millennial celebrations in 1896, marked a significant moment in the Curia’s history. It is interesting that other sources state that the construction started as late as 1891 and lasted till 1897.

The 20th century brought tumultuous times. Despite political upheaval and changes in government, the Curia of Hungary continued to function, even playing a role in politically charged trials. The Curia transitioned from the Royal Hungarian Curia to the Supreme Court of the People’s Republic and finally, back to the Curia of Hungary. This name change, enacted in 2011, reflected a renewed focus on separating administrative and professional competencies within the judicial system. Today, the Curia of Hungary stands as the highest court in the land, a symbol of legal continuity and evolution, adjudicating matters of administrative, civil, criminal, economic and labor law.
