Imagine a structure so light it seems to float above the plaza. That is The Crystal in Copenhagen. It is an extension of Nykredit headquarters. The Crystal stands as a testament to modern design.
The Crystal got its name from its crystalline form. It rests on a single point and a single line. This allows for unhindered views. Passage is also possible underneath the building. The architects at Schmidt Hammer Lassen designed this building. They focused on creating a transparent and geometrical form. The Crystal reflects its surroundings. It adapts to the lines of sight, scales, and functions of its immediate context. The building harmonizes in scale with neighboring buildings. It invites people to explore the space between the city and the harbor.
What makes The Crystal special? It is the building’s dedication to sustainability. The Crystal has a low energy consumption of only 70 kWh per square meter. This is 25% less than the requirements of existing energy legislation in Denmark. How is this achieved? The Crystal uses a highly effective insulating triple-layered inner glass facade. The roof is covered with photovoltaic panels. These panels generate 80,000 kWh per year.
The plaza surrounding The Crystal is designed by Stig L. Andersson. He worked with Schmidt Hammer Lassen on this project. The plaza’s light-colored slate paving continues into the ground floor of the building. This integrates the exterior and interior spaces. The plaza features Denmark’s largest fountain. It consists of a circular water basin and 2,000 valves. These valves spray water in varying heights. The water can reach up to 2.5 meters. At night, the water feature is illuminated. Benches and a single row of trees line one side of the space.
The Crystal also uses rainwater. Rainwater is collected from the building and around it. It is then used in toilets. Water from the harbor is used for additional cooling in summer. Daylight, ventilation, and noise have also been taken into consideration. The Crystal uses a hybrid ventilation system with night cooling. Natural ventilation is channeled through the double facade. It goes out through the two skylights in the atrium. This maintains optimum indoor temperatures. It also creates a healthy working environment for the 300 employees.
The large three-dimensional steel structure functions as an architectural element. It allows the building to dispense with pillars. This creates maximum flexibility for the employees. The building’s interior provides opportunities for open-plan offices and meeting rooms.
The Crystal has received several awards. It won a LEAF Award for structural design in 2011. It was also nominated for Building of the Year in 2012 by ArchDaily.
