What if the very ground beneath our feet held stories of sporting legends? That ground is Lord’s Cricket Ground. This is not just any cricket ground. It is the “home of cricket”. Lord’s has witnessed history unfold since 1814.

Lord’s is owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club. The MCC also owns the copyright to the Laws of Cricket. They update the rules of the game. The England and Wales Cricket Board also calls Lord’s home. So do the Middlesex County Cricket Club and the European Cricket Club.

Step onto this hallowed ground and feel the echoes of past triumphs. Imagine Don Bradman’s epic 254 runs in 1930. It was a record for 60 years. Picture Graham Gooch hitting a monster 333 against India in 1990. Feel the weight of Glen McGrath’s record. He took 26 wickets here, the most by a non-Englishman.

Notice the slope of the outfield. The south-west side is much lower than the north-west side. This affects the ball’s movement when bowling. In 2002 and 2003, the outfield was relaid for a lot of money. This reduced ticket refunds for wet weather matches.

The first test match at Lord’s was in 1884. England beat Australia. Australia first won here in 1888. From 1934 to 2009, Australia dominated England at Lord’s. England finally won in 2009 during the Ashes Series.

Don’t miss the MCC Museum. It’s the world’s oldest sporting museum. See the Ashes urn and other cricket memorabilia. There is even a stuffed sparrow. It was hit by a ball in 1936.

Lord’s isn’t just for cricket. It has a full-length tennis court. During World War I, there was a charity baseball game. The 2012 Olympics archery event was held here.

The longest-running cricket match here is between Eton College and Harrow School. It began in 1805.

Look up at Father Time. The weathervane watches over the ground since 1926. It has seen many iconic moments. These include World Cup wins and Olympic events.

The Compton and Edrich stands were redeveloped. They now add 2,600 seats. This brings the total capacity to 31,100.

Lord’s continues to evolve. It preserves its history while modernizing. It also works to be more inclusive.

Lord’s Cricket Ground is more than a venue. It is a living museum. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of cricket. Its story continues. Each match adds a new chapter to its rich history.
